The times when I've gotten in trouble have always been while off duty. Here's a story that should give us all food for thought. It's our nature to want to help, but we're not supermen. Another great argument for two-officer cruisers.
On February 15, 2011 Oklahoma City police officer Chad Peery was off-duty when he was asked by a business owner to assist him with some confrontational customers inside his business. The owner of the business knew he was a police officer. Officer Peery was in plain clothes. Officer Peery approached the three individuals, identified himself as a police officer and escorted them outside. Once outside, he was assaulted so severely that his neck was broken. This resulted in him being paralyzed. The three men have been arrested and are awaiting charges in the Oklahoma County Jail.
This Thursday, April 21, 2011 representatives of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 123 are organizing a fundraiser to support Chad Peery. This event will be held at the FOP Lodge Hall which is located at 1624 South Agnew in Oklahoma City from 11:00 AM until 6:00 PM. [South of I 40 on Agnew and East on SW 15th off I 240.]
