Procedures to be completed prior to submitting a Reserve Appointment Statement to the Academy:
- Your Reserve Police Officer candidate has completed the hours of Reserve Police Officer training as required by South Carolina Law.
- Notification by the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy that the candidate has achieved a minimum passing score of 70% on the Reserve Officer Written Certification Examination.
- Your candidate has been sworn in as an active Reserve Officer with your department.
- The following documentation is on file with your department:
- A photo copy of his/her birth certificate or similar approved document
- High School diploma or GED certification
- Report of medical exam showing satisfactory to the chief/sheriff
- Fingerprint card showing results of SLED and FBI identification fingerprint check. All charges must show a final disposition, plus whether it was a felony or misdemeanor
- Applicant holds a valid/current S.C. driver's license with no record for the past five (5) years for suspension as a result of DUI or Leaving the Scene of an Accident
- A background investigation, including a credit check, has been conducted, and the results are satisfactory
- A recent photograph
- A copy of verification of sixty hours of training and firearm qualification
- A copy of the Reserve Appointment Statement
Completing the Reserve Appointment Statement:
- All requested data is completed.
- Date, time and location the Academy's Reserve written examination was taken.
- Proper signature and dates are provided.
Situations where a Reserve Appointment Statement is necessary:
- Your department appoints a Reserve Officer, who is in compliance, with less than one year break in service.
- Your department appoints a Class I LE, who is in compliance, with less than one year break in service.
Break In Service:
Over one year but less than three years:Documentation to be submitted to the Academy:
- Town attorney instructs your candidate on the legal portion of the Reserve manual.
- Town attorney administers a legal test to your candidate. The test must be ten questions.
- Candidate has a current physical.
- Candidate qualifies with the agency-issued weapon using an Academy approved course of fire.
Three year break in service:
- Affidavit from the attorney that the candidate was 80% successful in passing the legal test.
- Academy firearm qualification form.
- Reserve Appointment Statement
- Candidate must complete all required Reserve training.
- Appointing agency must submit Reserve Appointment Statement to the Academy.

When your Reserve Officer is no longer appointed by your department for the following reasons:
- Reserve Officer voluntarily resigned
- Termination due to involuntary separation (please specify reason)
- Termination due to disqualification (please specify nature of disqualification)
- Misconduct resulting in termination (please specify reason)
- Misconduct resulting in suspension (please specify reason)
When a Class 1 LE transfers to Reserve status within your agency:
When a Class 1 LE voluntarily resigns, in good standing, and is appointed please indicate, on the form, the date of transfer from Class 1 LE to Reserve status.
NOTE: Class 1LE can remain a Reservist up to three years. Should the officer go over three years and desire Class 1LE certification, the nine week basic training course would be required.
MAINTAINING RESERVE OFFICER'S TRAINING FILE
The following documentation MUST be kept in the Reserve Officer's training file:
- All documentation that is required by South Carolina Law
(See page 1 item #4 (1-9)) - Copy of Reserve Appointment Statement
- Copy of Verification of Training
- Time sheet
Hours Reserve Officer worked = 20 hours each month
60 hours each quarter - Copies of in-service training (example: crime to court, legals, cores)

- PURPOSE:
- To report a change in status, within your department, from a full-time law enforcement officer to a certified reserve officer
- DISTRIBUTION:
- Completed by the department or agency and submitted to the Certification Unit of the Criminal Justice Academy Training Division
