The recent surge in shootings of law enforcement officers gives us all pause.  We know that killing cops is becoming a symbol of honor in gangland, always has been in the OMG world (that's outlaw motorcycle gangs), and is increasingly so with a variety of fringe groups that advocate violence.  Why cops?  Because we're a visible and easily targetted symbol of the government.

We all need to practive good tactics when responding to any situation.  Always give yourself cover.  Always approach any situation from a position that keeps you in the superior tactical position.  Entry into any building is extremely risky.  You don't want to find yourself in a funnel with no way out:  what we used to call the kill zone in ambush tactics.

RLEOs have a good safety record.  In general, we're a more mature (yeah, somewhat elderly) population.  Many of us prefer a two-cop car, which is a major step forward in ensuring tactical safety.  Here, RLEOs can be a major safety factor by providing a second cop riding with a full-timer.  It's just good tactics.  How can any agency in these time say no to this kind of valuable free help?

It's been mentioned in the media that roughly half of the law enforcement community doesn't routinely wear a vest.  That's crazy.  In OCSO, not wearing a vest is a firing offense:  and, that's good policy.

Agencies can help protect us by ensuring that we blend.  Uniforms and insignia that clearly identify us as RLEOs can give a potential assailant a false sense of confidence.

Best wishes, and stay safe.
